9 Best Shopify Alternatives for Small Business (2026)
Shopify is excellent at being a full store. Plenty of small businesses do not need a full store. They need a few products, a booking, or a “pay this invoice” button. Paying Shopify’s stack for that is optional.
When to stay on Shopify
You have a catalogue, apps, and a marketing stack that already lives there. Leaving is a project. Stay until the fees hurt more than the move.
When to look elsewhere
- WooCommerce — if you already run WordPress and can maintain it.
- Squarespace Commerce — if the site is the brand and the shop is small.
- Wix eCommerce — same idea, more drag-and-drop.
- Big Cartel / Etsy — makers, not a custom brand site.
- Gumroad / Lemon Squeezy — digital products, not a hardware catalogue.
- Square Online — if you already take Square in person.
- PayPal buttons — ugly, but honest for one or two items.
- Stripe Payment Links — invoices and a handful of SKUs.
- Volnyn — a business website first, with selling added when you need it, without turning the whole site into an app store.
Pick the smallest tool that can take the payment. You can always graduate to Shopify later. Starting there because “everyone uses it” is how you pay for features you never open.
