Courses

Sell online courses from your site. Build courses from modules and lessons with videos, files, text, code, and quizzes, add instructors, issue completion certificates, and manage enrolments.

Course management turns your site into a small online school. You create a course, fill it with modules and lessons, set a price (or make it free), and students enrol and learn on your site.

Courses are available on plans that include Course Management.

Add ?language=en (or another language code) to manage course content in that language.

Before you start

Set up two things first so you can pick them when you create a course:

  1. Instructors — click Add Instructor and enter a name, occupation, description, and image. Open Social links on an instructor to add their profiles. Mark an instructor as featured to highlight them on your site.
  2. Categories — add course categories, such as "Design" or "Marketing." You can mark a category as featured too.

Create a course

  1. Open Courses and click Add Course.
  2. Fill in the course details:

Title The course name.
Category and Instructor Pick from the lists you set up.
Thumbnail Image Shown in course lists. Best at 370 × 250.
Cover Image Shown on the course page.
Introduction Video A video link visitors can watch before enrolling.
Pricing Type Free or Premium.
Current Price / Previous Price For premium courses. The previous price shows crossed out.
Description What the course is about.
Features What students get. Put each feature on a new line.
Meta Keywords / Meta Description Search engine text for the course page.
  1. Click Submit.

Each course has a Status — Draft while you build it, Published when it's live. Mark courses as featured to show them in your theme's featured section.

Add modules and lessons

A course is made of modules (chapters), and each module holds lessons.

  1. In the courses list, click Manage → Modules on your course.
  2. Click Add Module. Enter a title and a serial number (its order), and set its status.
  3. Open the module and click Add Lesson. Enter a title and serial number, and set its status.

Add lesson content

Open a lesson's Contents to add what students see. A lesson can hold several pieces of content:

Video Upload an .mp4 video. Turn on Video Preview to let visitors watch it before they enrol.
File A download in .txt, .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .zip format.
Text Written notes or a lesson article.
Code A code snippet, shown formatted.
Quiz Questions with multiple options and the right answer marked.

Drag and drop the items to set the order students see them in.

Quizzes

  1. In a lesson, click Add Quiz.
  2. Enter the Question, then add each Option and mark the Right Answer. You can mark more than one right answer.
  3. Save. Use Manage Quiz to edit or delete questions.

Course extras

From Manage on a course you can also set:

  • FAQs — questions and answers shown on the course page, with a serial number for the order.
  • Thanks Page — the message students see after they enrol.
  • Certificate Settings — see below.

Completion certificates

Give students a certificate when they finish a course.

  1. Open Manage → Certificate Settings on the course.
  2. Turn Certificate Status on.
  3. Choose whether students must finish first:
    • Enforce Video Watching — students must watch the lesson videos.
    • Enforce Quiz Completion — students must complete the quizzes.
  4. Enter a Certificate Title and Certificate Text.
  5. Save.

Use these shortcodes in the certificate text to fill in details for each student:

Shortcode Replaced with
{name} Student name
{title} Course title
{duration} Course duration
{date} Course completion date

Example: This certifies that {name} completed {title} on {date}.

Coupons

  1. Open Coupons (/user/course-management/coupons).
  2. Add a coupon with a code, a percentage or fixed discount, start and end dates, and the courses it applies to.

Manage enrolments

Every enrolment in a premium course has a payment status:

Status Meaning
Pending Waiting for payment or your approval — for example an offline bank transfer.
Completed Paid. The student has access.
Rejected Declined.

To manage enrolments:

  1. Open Enrolments. Filter by All, Completed, Pending, or Rejected, or search by order ID or course name.
  2. Change the Payment Status from the dropdown. Volnyn emails the student when an enrolment is approved or rejected.
  3. Click Details to see the student's information, payment method, and any uploaded Receipt Image.
  4. Download the Invoice, or Delete enrolments you no longer need.

Enrolments report

Open Report (/user/course-management/course-enrolments/report) to list enrolments by date range, payment status, and payment method. Click Export to download them as a spreadsheet.

Tips

  • Keep a course in Draft until every module has content.
  • Turn on Video Preview for your first lesson so visitors can try before they buy.
  • Short lessons with a quiz at the end keep students moving.
  • Use Enforce Quiz Completion if your certificate needs to mean something.

FAQ

Can I offer a free course? Yes. Set Pricing Type to Free.

Which video formats can I upload? .mp4 files. You can also use an introduction video link on the course itself.

How do students pay? With the payment methods you set up in Payment gateways.

Where do I set the course currency? In General Settings (/user/general-settings). See Pages, menus and sections.

Can I translate a course? Yes. Add a language to your site, then create the course content in that language. See Languages and SEO.
